Tips for Keeping the Kids Busy in Queens During the Summer
Summer is in full swing, and plenty on staff here at Farenga Funeral Home know the joys and challenges of keeping children moving during these steamy months in Astoria. We want to start this blog with two pieces of good news:
- It’s not snowing and cold outside.
- We live in an area with endless kid-friendly options!
As much as we may take it for granted, the Greater Queens area is bursting with opportunities for those who are young and young at heart. Here, we’ve collected a few of our favorite summertime destinations. But first, remember this: One of the many fun parts of having children is the opportunity to see through their eyes. So even if you’ve visited one or more of these destinations, you’ll be surprised how refreshing it is to set your adult responsibilities aside for an afternoon and simply enjoy yourself alongside your children.
Tour the Queens County Farm Museum
A working, 47-acre farm with goats, hens, and pigs . . . Who can say no to that?! This property sits on the largest remaining tract of farmland in NYC. Tromp through historic farm buildings, greenhouses, an orchard and herb garden, and enjoy hay rides on weekends. Who would think you could visit a farm without ever leaving the city?
Stroll through Queens Botanical Garden
You may not automatically pair “kids” with “botanical gardens,” but think again! This is a perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy the sights and smells of nature, all while exploring the garden’s 39 acres. Don’t miss the bee garden – a highlight for any age!
Try a new food at New World Mall
New York’s largest indoor Asian mall boasts a massive Asian supermarket and dozens of food vendors. Each member of the family can sample tantalizing foods like dumplings, dim sum, spring rolls, and Taiwanese fried chicken to name a few. Prices are reasonable, so this is the perfect opportunity to branch out and take a culinary risk.
Go “playground hopping” at Flushing Meadows Corona Park
Bop from one playground to the next for a change of pace that’ll burn off some energy! The accessible Playground for All Children and the dinosaur-themed Jurassic Playground are favorites. End your rendezvous with a spin on the carousel – adults too!
Take in the Jim Henson exhibit at the Museum of Moving Image
Maybe it’s the nostalgia of this exhibit that speaks to us. After all, The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, and countless other titles were a part of nearly ALL of our childhoods. This exhibit features nearly 500 artifacts available for viewing. It’s definitely worth a visit!
