Alfred Siegfried Gusek, age 84, passed away peacefully Monday, July 20th, 2020 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Queens, NY.  He was born May 29, 1936 in Schwarzhofen, East Prussia, Germany to Siegfried Gusek and Elizabeth (Pruschitzki) Gusek.  He is survived by his loving son, Eric.
Alfred had a difficult childhood. His father was separated from the family during World War II and spent a number of years in a Russian POW camp. Alfred, his mother Elizabeth and his two brothers, Heinrich “Ted” Gusek and Richard Gusek, successfully escaped from Russian controlled East Germany and lived as refugees in the west. The family was eventually reunited in 1948 and made their way to NYC in 1952. They lived in Astoria Queens, on the same block that Alfred would call home for the rest of his life.
Alfred was a baker by trade, working long hours in bakeries throughout Queens and Manhattan. He would always be extra busy around the holidays baking cookies, cakes and breads but would still make his way to every family gathering to spread his joy and then fall fast asleep!  Alfred was hard working, honest, generous and kind. He loved his family and friends and would be there for them no matter what. He always had a big heart, a smile on his face and a joke to share.
Alfred married his loving wife Blanca (Cespedes) Gusek in 1966. She passed away in 1994 at age 53.  Later in life Alfred found another close partner, Carmen Morales, who passed on in 2011.
Alfred is survived by his brother, Heinrich “Ted” Gusek; Alfred’s son, Eric A. Gusek: Carmen’s son, John “Peter” Pizarro, as well as seven nieces and nephews; Timothy (Kathleen) Gusek, Marilyn (Stefan Roman) Merlot, Michael (Arlene) Gusek, Theodore (Nichole Crook) Gusek, Crystal (Zachary) Butz, Christiane (Michael) Chiappinelli, and Peter (Amy) Gusek.
***Memorial Donations may be made in Alfred’s memory to the American Heart Association: 10 E. 40th St. 11th Floor, NY, NY. 10016 or to the American Parkinson Disease Foundation: 135 Parkinson Ave. Staten Island, NY 10305.
There is no immediate service scheduled but the family will hold a remembrance event at a future date.
