John (Jan) Drobenko,  at the age of 70, of Astoria NY, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020. He was born on August 19th, 1950 in Kaszuny, Poland, to the late John and Maria (Kondryszyn) Drobenko.

John came to the United States in 1965 with his parents and 4 brothers in search of a better life. While establishing roots in their new country, the Drobenko family settled in NYC’s East Village and worked together at Leshko’s restaurant. In 1970, John moved from the East Village to Astoria where he resided with his family through the remainder of his life.

At the age of 21, John started his professional career of 32 years at Chase Manhattan Bank (now JPMorgan Chase & Co.) and retired in 2003.

By faith, John met the love of his life in 1979 at a dance in Passaic, NJ. Together they spent their lives dancing, cooking, traveling and entertaining friends and family. In 1985, their family grew when they were blessed with their first born, John. In the following years, they welcomed daughter Maria and second son Peter.

John’s happiest moments were spending time with his wife and children in Wildwood,NJ; Oselia CYM in Ellenville, NY; Naples, FL or in the garden oasis of their backyard.

John, a man of few words with a huge heart, enjoyed the simpler things in life. He loved drinking coffee on his stoop while welcoming neighbors for a quick chat.  It brought him much joy watching his children do what they loved; from his daughters Ukrainian dance performances to listening to the tunes of his sons’ band (HRIM). He most proudly took his wife or daughters to the dance floor where he ensured his friends knew that his boys were performing.

John is survived by his wife of 34 years Maria (Gojdycz), his children, John (wife Viorica Canazir), Maria, Peter (wife Larysa Balko) and grandchildren Nicholas and Kathryn. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings Jerry (wife Liza), Bohdan (wife Marika), Nicholas (wife Marika), Walter (wife Larissa) and many nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was predeceased by his parents John & Maria (Drobenko) .

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 18th from 3 to 7pm at Farenga Funeral Home (38-08 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY). Panachyda will be at 6pm.
