Robert M. Russo Jr., 45, of Astoria, NY died June 16, 2020 surrounded by his family at home. He was the beloved husband of Yvonne and devoted father to his boys Dominic, Matthew, and Derek. He is survived by his parents Robert and Maria Russo, grandmother Domenica Montali and brothers Anthony (Laura), and Steven (Jacqueline).
Rob was born in Astoria and lived his entire life there. He attended St. John’s Preparatory School (high school) and Penn State University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He also met his wife, Yvonne, while at college at Penn State. He was a dedicated Penn State Nittany Lions football fan and also a lifelong NY Yankees fan and attended games for both teams as often as he could. He was diagnosed with cancer at a young age and battled it for 21 years but never let it define him or how he lived. He enjoyed spending time with his boys coaching their little league baseball teams, taking them water skiing and tubing at the lake where his family has had a house for generations and also taught them how to snow ski – his most beloved hobby. He taught his kids to ski at a very early age and made many great memories skiing together as a family. He never let his cancer stop him from finding new adventures to do with his family and finding interesting spots to travel. Rob was a constant inspiration to many.
He spent his entire professional career in the pharmaceutical/biotechnical industry often selling drugs targeted to cancer patients like himself. His combination of personal experience and intense knowledge of pharmaceutical information made him very successful and highly regarded at every company he worked for not only with his coworkers but the physician community he served. Over the years he won many awards for his sales achievements, served as mentors for many colleagues and shared his personal journey to help other people on his team understand the importance of their job. He was the ultimate team player-constantly humble in his own accomplishments and always encouraging others and assisting even when unsolicited.
Rob’s desire to give back to Dana Farber Cancer Institute led to years of fundraising for the cancer center that gave him hope when there seemed to be none. He was supported by his fundraising army “Team Russo” who together raised over $2 million dollars towards cancer research and “The Team Russo Lab for Sarcoma for Research” was established in his honor.
