Robert Swierk, of Islip, NY, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2020 at Southside Hospital on Long Island from complications related to COVID-19.

Robert (Bob) was born to the late Walter and Florence Swierk in Boston, MA. He graduated from Don Bosco Technical Catholic High School and later attended the University of Massachusetts Boston, earning bachelors degrees in English and Theater.

While in college, Bob earned fame on campus as President of the drama club and put on notable productions of everything from the Greek tragedies to Tennessee Williams. After graduating, he initially pursued a career in theater working as a lighting director in the Boston area. At clubs like the Chateau deVille and others, Bob designed the lighting for many of the biggest acts of the era – Tom Jones, Donna Summers, Engelbert Humperdinck, and others. His love of the theater and talent for lighting later took him from Massachusetts to Nevada, where he worked on shows in both Reno and Las Vegas and managed a theater company.

Though Bob loved the theater throughout his life, his true creative passion was his love of music. With the encouragement of an uncle, Bob first picked up the guitar as a teenager and remained an avid and talented player all his life. Though he occasionally worked as a professional musician and recorded music, he took the most joy in performing for a small group of family or jamming in a band with friends.

In 1980, missing family and friends, Bob returned to the East coast and moved to the city that would become his adopted home for the rest of his life. After moving to New York, Bob left the theater business for the restaurant industry and worked at many legendary New York restaurants including Lüchows, Maxim’s, and Water’s Edge. In the mid-1990s, seeking a career with more stability and the potential for retirement, he discovered a natural talent for computers and technical support. For the last 16 years of his life, Bob worked as a helpdesk analyst for Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver, and Jacobson.

In addition to music and theater, Bob was an avid cook who especially loved the annual Swierk family pierogi day. In his later years, he golfed with his brothers and nephews. He took great joy in compiling his annual Christmas CD, which combined classic Christmas standards with offbeat, hidden gems. Finding the hidden picture of Bob and his wife Elizabeth on each year’s cover was a yearly game.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents Florence and Walter, brothers Walter and David, and sister-in-law Patricia. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; son John and daughter-in-law Lindsey; grandchildren Clara and Paul; brother Stephen; sisters-inlaw Debbie, Pamela, and Laurie; stepdaughters Victoria and Regina; and six nieces
and nephews, along with many other devoted family members and friends. A public memorial service is planned for the future when friends and family can safely gather.
